Help ! I'm crying at the club - again

Oizys - A review

The only way that I could control this pain was not to think of it.

Oizys (2024) is one of the most heartfelt and raw homages to friendship I’ve ever seen. I initially thought this film would steer to a completely different direction, already making me prepare witty comments about how this is just my Gudde Wëllen nightmare, considering I don’t remember the last time I didn’t cry there because of someone I loved ... However, the twist just knocked me off my feet, making me realise that there’s even deeper sadness to friendships and I felt my heart breaking.

The most beautiful thing that art allows you to do, is that you can immortalise the people you spend your life loving. Oizys is one honest love letter to devotion, intimacy, and, essentially, life. Life brings moments of insurmountable grief that in the end will be overcome.

Rari’s sheer talent as a filmmaker shines through, their deep understanding of aesthetics and different art forms are visibly noticeable here. Right in the opening scene, you have this intense beat that carries the weight of emotions felt and the lighting is just so beautiful. Oizys uses physical closeness to depict the emotional intimacy that takes over the protagonist’s brain until all that he has left is memories of the deep love. The scene in front of the shop is arguably the best one in the entire film.

The back and forth between the protagonist and the mannequins is pure brilliance, and the dance performed adds to the almost choreographical composition of grief and the desperate attempts to live with it. Rari masters poetry in film, there’s clearly a deep understanding of art here: every scene is poetic and can be dissected. I already told her about how one scene just makes me think of Fleabag:

I don't know what to do with it.

With what?

With all the love I have for her.

I don't know where to... put it now.

 I'll take it.

I feel like when there’s so much love left for a person who isn’t there anymore, you have to use that love and give it to someone else. Otherwise, it’ll spoil and turn into unconquerable pain. You shouldn’t lose the love you have; this film clearly deals with this

Criticism regarding this short film would just be me nitpicking, there’s always elements one thinks they would have done differently, but that wouldn’t be Rari’s truthful depiction of emotions. As a viewer, one must gracefully take it all in and acknowledge the courage this must have took.

Rari will go far; mark my words!!
